EQUALITY CHARTER SCHOOL EARNS “TOP 10” RANKING FOR 8th GRADE PERFORMANCE GROWTH AMONGST ALL NYC CHARTER SCHOOLS
Co-op City middle school’s performance ranked No. 1 for math, No. 8 for English
Bronx, NY – The Equality Charter School, a rigorous, diverse and all-inclusive middle school located in Co-op City, has soared to the top, according to the newest New York City Department of Education rankings of all NYC Charter Schools. Equality earned a Top 10 rating for 8th grade performance growth in both math and ELA (English Language Arts), ranking No.1 in math and No. 8 in ELA, principal Caitlin Franco announced today.
“We are thrilled that our commitment to the success of each of our students, regardless of where they were academically when they arrived at Equality, is having a dramatic impact,” said Franco. “And the results prove it,” she added.
“The new rankings reflect so well on Equality’s unique model, in which we place a high emphasis on individualized learning in an always inclusive environment,” Franco continued. “Students who study with Equality for multiple years improve significantly each year.”
Franco, who earlier in her career taught both at middle schools and high schools in the Bronx and Harlem, credits her scholars and her staff for Equality’s impressive showing. Beyond the rise of Equality to the top tier of charter schools based on performance growth, 100 percent of its students who took high school regents exams passed, and 70 percent of its students passed the citywide math test, outperforming all of District 11, the Bronx, and NYC (45%, 44%, and 55% respectively).
The school’s constituencies evidently are pleased. Teachers, parents, and students rated the school “above average” in every category, according to the latest NYCDOE Learning Environment Survey.
Franco said that while she was heartened by the school’s high marks and growth, “I’m not surprised. Our success is a result of committed hard work, not only in academics, but also in our rigorous athletic and extracurricular activities, along with the staff’s focus on the social development of each student.”
“Equality scholars,” Franco continued, “develop a passion for learning and know that faculty and staff are devoted to their success and invested in them as individuals. We want them to be challenged, to be excited about school, to be on a trajectory for success in high school and college, and to make a difference in their communities.”
